Meet Ria Cider Chat CEO, Podcast Producer & Cider MC

Ria at NSP 200x300

In 1994, Ria began teaching ‘How to Make Cider’ workshops and did so for the next 17 years. While she is an award-winning cider maker at the amateur level, these days she crafts only a ‘wee bit’ of cider at home. “When fall arrives, I can’t help but forage for apples and roll out the old 1800s press,” says Ria.

Today, when not producing Cider Chat podcast episodes or traveling to cover a cider region, she reviews ciders for a series titled “Bottles on My Desk” (B.O.M.D.), which is broadcast on Cider Chat’s social media platforms

As a seasoned cider judge, Ria has had the privilege to evaluate entries at both local and international competitions. Her discussions on judging methods, particularly her recordings of the ‘Best in Show’ evaluations for featured Cider Chat podcast episodes, have motivated both amateur and professional cider makers to participate in competitions.

Since 2003, she has been penning a craft beer column covering western Massachusetts and the Berkshires. In this role, she has written many “cider features,” helping to promote cider to a broad audience of Yankee Brew News (YBN) readers. YBN holds the distinction of being the oldest ‘Beeriodical’ in the US.

In 2018, she launched Totally Cider Tours, offering cider tours both nationally and internationally.

2022: Ria organized and hosted CiderDays 2.0, a two-day event that featured sold-out workshops, author talks, a Cider Pop-UP, and a Cider Dinner celebrating women in cider.

2023: Ria was awarded the “Significant Impact Award”, by the American Cider Association (ACA). During the awards ceremony, Ria was credited with garnering 20% of the attendees via her platforms, for the annual conference CiderCon, which is the largest trade conference for cider in the world.

The Talking Pommes

At Cider Chat Central, magic unfolds, and Pome Fruit comes to life! While there are many “Talking Pommes” in Ciderville, it’s primarily Mr. Quince, Perry Pear, and The Medlars who work behind the scenes. Occasionally, they grace the mic, adding a touch of levity and reminding us all that cider equals fun.

Ep 350 pear and apple podcasters

Don’t be surprised if you hear Mr. Quince clearing his deep baritone throat with an “em” or saying “Roger that!” to confirm that the podcast is progressing. Mr. Quince is a rock star in Ciderville, and so is Perry Pear, who would prefer if we called this podcast “Perry Chat”.

The Medlars are a very special pome with a notably high voice, likely due to undue attention from Medlar bullies. However, that’s a story best explored in Episode 134, titled ‘Medlars are Pomme Rock Stars’.

Cider Chat Mission

At Cider Chat, our mission extends beyond simply sharing our passion for cider, perry, and all things pome.

Through engaging interviews with cider makers, enthusiasts, and key figures in the cider trade, we aim to weave a rich tapestry of stories and insights that spotlight cider’s profound cultural and culinary importance across various regions.

By integrating dynamic podcasting and comprehensive multimedia content, we offer our global community of cider aficionados a multifaceted exploration of cider’s role in culinary arts, from its traditional roots to contemporary innovations. Additionally, our curated cider tours invite enthusiasts and industry members to embark on immersive journeys, experiencing firsthand the unique flavors and traditions that make cider an integral part of regional dining experiences.

Together, we hope to enrich our community’s understanding and appreciation of cider, fostering deeper connections between people, places, and the art of cider making.
