Wild Child Cellars – barrel aging ciders – cidery in progress

Wild Child Cellars is a new cidery startup based in western Massachusetts. This cidery in progress is located in Turners Falls a town flanked by the Connecticut River to the west and a canal that had powered massive paper mills. In between the river and canal is an area called the “Patch”. Multi family homes originally built for workers of days gone by are to the south end of the Patch and to the north stand large New England sized brick mill buildings.

One in particular has been vacant for years and is now being renovated into Wild Child Cellars by April Woodard and Curt Sherrer. April has been an avid cidermaker now finally able to realize her commercial cidermaking dreams and Curt is the owner of Millstone Cellars in Maryland. Listen to Cider Chat episode 20 Curt Sherrer | Millstone Cellars, Maryland
By the way, this very podcast interview is the round about way that got April and Curt together….but we will save that for a future episode of Cider Chat.

Back to Wild Child Cellars – this mill as pictured is massive and the video below shows only one floor. Below the event space and future cider bar is an even larger underground space where Wild Child will cellar their barrels. This cidery uses only barrels for fermenting and conditioning cider. besides cellaring their cider these two entrepreneurs hope to provide retail space someday for a charcuterie or cheesemaker. Having stood in the lower area of this old mill, surrounded by massive stone walls deep below ground, the cool ambient temperature screams cheese cave.

Expect Wild Child Cellars to be open in 2018 – maybe even as early as May!

Based in Franklin County, the area of Massachusetts that hosts the annual CiderDays event, now in its 23rd years, this cidery will certainly become a focal point for many cider loving fans to gather both during Franklin County CiderDays and year round. Do put it on your list of to-do stops when out and about in Ciderville, to taste what is sure to be awarding winning ciders and to gaze upon a building filled with history and stunning design elements.
